Welcome! I have been a student of Byzantine history since I first read Edward Gibbon's "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" many years ago. My perception is that the Eastern Roman Empire is widely misunderstood and misrepresented both in the world at large and on the Internet.

I do not pretend to have the ability to reverse those perceptions via this website, but it will be one place that accurately portrays the glory that was Byzantium.

While the Byzantines themselves did not refer to themselves or their empire using as "Byzantines" or "Byzantium," that has, for better or worse, become common usage. I also personally like the way that it sounds and it is widely understood. Thus, I will refer to the Eastern Roman Empire as "Byzantium" and the people of the empire as "Byzantines" without apology. I apologize to any purists who are offended.
